VERNE Objectives: Transforming Tourism from Linearto Circular
Tourism can become a regenerative force that gives back as much as it takes. The VERNE project is actively building this future right now, turning the concept of circular tourism from vision to reality.
Our Mission
VERNE aims to accelerate the transition of tourist destinations toward sustainable and circular models throughout Europe. Tourism currently follows a linear “take-make-waste” approach, but our mission is to reshape it into circular systems where resources maintain their value, waste is minimized, and local communities thrive.
Five Key Objectives
- Create a comprehensive assessment framework We’re developing practical tools to measure the costs, benefits, and impacts of transitioning to circular tourism. This includes specialized indicators for businesses and destinations to track their progress across environmental, social, and economic fronts.
- Design tailored circular solutions Every destination has unique needs. We’re creating a catalog of over 30 systemic solutions that can be mixed and matched based on local conditions. These span everything from water and waste management to energy efficiency and digital innovations.
- Build enabling digital tools Technology can accelerate sustainability. We’re developing the VERNE Ecosystem—a digital platform that connects stakeholders, simplifies collaboration, and rewards circular behaviors through an innovative marketplace.
- Engage local communities No solution works without local buy-in. Through Communities of Practice in five pilot destinations, we’re bringing together residents, businesses, and authorities to co-create and implement circular models that genuinely fit each location.
- Promote replication across Europe Success means nothing if it stays isolated. We’re creating guidelines, training programs, and policy recommendations to help other destinations replicate our proven approaches. Everything will be accessible through our One-Stop-Shop for sustainable tourism.

From Theory to Practice
VERNE distinguishes itself through its hands-on approach. We move beyond theory to implement and test solutions in real destinations across Europe, from Denmark to Greece. By 2027, we’ll have proven models ready for wider adoption, helping tourism become an environmental and social asset rather than a liability.
